The Inside Story on new Medicare Numbers Recently, Medicare updated patient IDs to now utilize a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) format instead of a Social Security Number. These new MBIs are made up of a combination of 9 letters and numbers. Certain letters have been excluded to avoid confusion when differentiating between a letter and number. For example, because the difference between “0” and “O” may be difficult to discern, the letter O is never used as part of an MBI. Per the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, letters that are never part of a patient’s Medicare ID include: S, L, O, I, B, and Z. Valley Medical Management Services is receiving many patient demographics for radiology billing with MBIs that erroneously include one of these 6 letters. Likely, the same issues with the demographic information we receive from your facility may cause delays and insufficiencies with patient billing at your facility as well. We would encourage each department director to reach out to your billing department to ensure they are in-the-know on this change to MBIs and that the staff performing insurance data entry are aware of these 6 excluded letters. We appreciate your help in ensuring your patients are billed in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner! |
